Mobile phone users could stand to make savings of 20pc-50pc if their GSM service providers were to be made to compete in an online auction, according to Hungarian online auction company Electool.
Electool CEO Akos Szabo said Electool has sold 250-300 mobile phone SIM cards in four oline auctions since the introduction of number portability on May 1. Corporate clients with more than fifty mobile phone subscriptions were eligible for the auctions. Some of these firms were able to make substantial savings at the auctions; however, not all of the auctions resulted in firms switching GSM providers, Mr Szabo said. This is because some firms' service providers ended up cutting prices to a degree which made their offers the most attractive. In addition to participation in the online auctions, Electool offers its clients cost analysis and consulting services. The company charges a fixed fee as well as a buyer's premium which corresponds to 50pc of the firm's savings in the first year. Mr Szabo said Electool, which is involved in other acquisitions and purchases, plans to turn a profit on sales of HUF 50m in 2004. Electool, which is owned by Hungarian private investors, is already present on the Romanian market and is planning to enter the Czech and Slovakian markets as well. The IT solutions for the online auctions are provided by a separate IT company. (HUF 100 = EUR 0.3976)
